VAT the way HMRC expects it
Feazio opens your books with UK rules: prices shown with VAT in them, the right rate on each item, a nine-box VAT return for Making Tax Digital and a service charge that goes to your staff in full.
- Tax on the bill
- Standard rate 20% on food and drink eaten in and on hot takeaway. Most cold takeaway food is zero-rated and shown apart; alcohol, confectionery, crisps, soft drinks and bottled water stay at 20%.
- Menu prices
- Shown to guests with VAT included, as the Price Marking Order requires.
- Service charge
- Off by default. A discretionary charge (often 12.5%) is outside the scope of VAT, and under the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act every penny goes to staff, so it is booked as owed to them, never as income.
- Rounding
- None. Exact pence on every bill.
- Tax return
- The nine boxes of your VAT return, from bills, purchases and expenses, for MTD-compatible bridging software.
- Financial year
- From 1 April, in line with the corporation tax year (you can change it).
- Registration
- Compulsory above £90,000 VAT-taxable turnover in any 12 months.
- Tax accounts
- VAT Payable and VAT reclaimable (input tax) added to your chart of accounts.

Good to know
- Zero-rated takeaway sales are shown on their own line in X and Z readings.
- Payroll exports for BrightPay and Sage 50 come from the same hours.
- Your Feazio subscription carries 20% VAT, reclaimable as input tax.
These are the defaults Feazio sets up for the UK. Tax rules change and every business is different, so your accountant can change any of them in settings.
